Orthoscopics

Since November 2004 Norville Opticians has been using the Orthoscopics system developed by Ian Jordan to help people with perceptual problems. You may have seen the BBC programme "My Family and Autism" a few years ago where Orthoscopics was demonstrated with astounding results.

This covers much more than just visual difficulties and Orthoscopics can help with conditions as diverse as:

  • Dyslexia
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders
  • Migraine
  • M.S.
  • Headaches
  • M.E.
  • Eye Muscle problems (including double vision and squint)
  • Lazy eye
  • Hearing difficulties
  • Speech difficulties
  • Neurological conditions
  • ADD/A.D.H.D

Jo O'Neill has been treating people with the Orthoscopic system in our Gloucester branch since Norville Opticians invested in the equipment. You may have seen Jo in local papers or heard her giving interviews on the Radio. Having seen over 150 people Jo is very experienced in using the system yet still amazed by the exceptional difference that Orthoscopics can make to people's lives.

Perceptual Problems

This is the name given to a group of symptoms caused by malfunctions in the eye/brain communication chain. It is estimated that up to 10% of children may suffer from this disorder to varying degrees.

A person with problems such as dyslexia may experience a range of symptoms from reading problems through to major perceptual difficulties. They will often underachieve in academic work or in social environments, self esteem is lowered, anti-social behaviour is common and the sufferer can even exhibit neurological symptoms. Symptoms are often unrecognised, even in a "routine eye test" and are common in the classroom.

Latest research suggests that all children or adults who are underachieving should be fully assessed for the visual perceptual problems, as well as having an eye examination.

Symptoms in children to look out for

  1. Does the child complain of words/letters moving or dancing about on the page?
  2. Does the child complain that words run together leaving little or no gap between them?
  3. Does the child suffer with double vision when reading?
  4. Does the text blur after reading for a few minutes?
  5. Do they have difficulty copying from the board?
  6. Do they rub their eyes frequently or complain that their eyes are sore when reading?
  7. Do they suffer with frontal headaches?
  8. Do they find it difficult to concentrate in class and are easily distracted?
  9. Do they reverse or invert letters or numbers frequently?
  10. Do they complain of shadows or colour patches on the page?
  11. Do they miss lines out when reading?

These are just a few of many symptoms that children with a perceptual problem may experience.  Any child that is underachieving at school with no real explanation as to why, should call Jo to arrange a free screening to see if colour could help.

Migraines and Headaches

Perceptual problems often result in headaches, migraines, dry eyes and many other conditions. Immediate relief is possible using the Orthoscopics System. The headache will often disappear before the tests are completed; it can be that dramatic. The treatments are simple and often work out a lot less costly than pharmaceutical products. Please call and ask for details at Norville Opticians, Gloucester.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders

People with Autism or Asperger Syndrome are more likely than the general population to have accompanying problems such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, balance and co ordination difficulties. The Orthoscopics System can help assess and treat these problems.
Orthoscopics is a revolutionary new system and can help with any of the difficulties mentioned above. If you have any of the conditions above or if you exhibit any symptoms of perceptual problems then contact Jo.
